Program Overview

Physician associates conducting inpatient medical rounds and case discussion at Chirayu University Hospital

Physician Associates (PAs) are trained in a medical model to deliver primary and team-based care under the supervision of a physician. The profession began in the United States in the 1960s to address a shortage of providers, and today PA roles exist in around 80 countries under many titles, from Physician Assistant to Clinical Officer. They have become a backbone of primary care in many countries.

India faces a shortage and uneven spread of physicians, especially in rural areas and urban slums. The PA model offers a practical way to widen access to care and to move towards Universal Health Coverage. The PA cadre began in India in 1992, and the handbook estimates around 10,000 PAs practise today, mainly in private and tertiary hospitals, across cardiology, nephrology, oncology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and more.

With a generalist foundation, PAs provide preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services across levels of care. Within a team led by a physician, they have autonomy in medical decisions, manage less complex cases so physicians can focus on specialised work, and may be given restricted prescribing rights under supervision.
